National Storm Chasers Convention

Denver, Colorado 2008

FOR SALE: Eastern Fury (Tornadoes of the Eastern United States)

The 10th annual National Storm Chaser Convention was held in Denver on February 15th through the 17th. Almost 300 storm chasers, meteorology students and researchers converged for two days of lectures, demonstrations, tornado and hurricane video, networking and partying. The lectures were a nice mixture of severe storm forecasting, basic research, in-depth studies of specific events including the Greensburg tornado, and photography techniques. The keynote speakers were Dr. Josh Wurman and Sean Casey discussing their work together intercepting tornadoes with Doppler on Wheels (DOW) and the Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV). They had some funny behind the scenes stories from the recent Discovery Channel series. Mike Umscheid gave a detailed analysis of the Greensburg tornado. Jon Davies, Dave Hoadley and Tim Mrshall gave some very useful forecasting tips during their talks. Tim Samaras had some wild high-speed video of lightning. The schedule was rearranged since Dr. Forbes had to remain at The Weather Channel for a forecasted tornado outbreak. Josh Wurman gave a quick preview of VORTEX 2. Hopefully most of the Vortex 2 projects will get funding for the 2009-2010 seasons.

I was able to sell many of my Eastern Fury DVD's. I had a great time seeing old friends, learning more about forecast techniques, tornado formation and chase equipment along with watching some amazing tornado and lightning video. Thanks to Roger Hill and Tim Samaras for organizing the conference along with David Drummond who did the website. Also, thanks to the speakers and sponsors.
