Mid-Atlantic Severe Weather Conference
Richmond, Virginia November 8, 2025
The eighth annual Mid-Atlantic Severe Weather Conference was held on November 8 at the Jepson Alumni Center University of Richmond. The conference was an amazing success with record attendance and a great group of speakers. The audience was a mix of storm chasers, meteorologists, weather enthusiasts, emergency management and media. There was a large group associated with the Virginia Tech meteorology program and their storm chase crew. The talks: "Dealing with Severe Weather on a University Campus" by Maribel Street; "The Cyclone of Rye Cove, Virginia's Deadliest Tornado by Ricky Mathews; "Journey from Butler County MO to Isle of Wight County, Virginia: Takeaways from the 2025 Virginia Tornado & Straight Line Wind Summit by Josh Behr and Wie Yusuf; "Hokiestorm: Three Decades on the Road" by Dave Carroll; "Tropical Season Tornadoes" by Chris Michaels; "2025 Mid-Atlantic Storm Chase Presentations" by Tim Grooms and Bill Hark (Me!); Communicating the Need to Prepare..and Practicing What We Preach" by Cheryl Nelson and "Hurricanes to Hail: Using Remote Cameras to Capture Data" by Mark Sudduth. The venue was very nice, and lunch was served to promote networking, one of the goals of the conference.
Thanks to Chris White who has spearheaded this conference from the beginning along with the other memebers of the planning committee and the wonderful line-up of speakers. Also, thanks to the Central VA Chapter of the American Meteorological Society for sponsoring the Friday evening social night at Capital Ale House and helping with some conference logistics. They have regular meetings in Richmond for those who have an interest in meteorology.
